"This book offered excellent insights into the type of leader I am now, and hopefully, will continue to embody in the future.
Currently a sophomore in college, I found many of Forrester's techniques, as well as those presented by her subjects, to be applicable. I have either utilized these techniques in the past or use them each and every day.
The material was relevant because a part from being a young woman, I am black studying communication/business/music and have experienced discrimination in these fields (gender, racial). I found myself to be drawn to two characters in particular: Alma (a black woman with a focus in law, art, and community outreach) and Jennifer (a woman with a focus in both the television and entertainment industries) because they, in some shape or form, related to my experiences and interests.
Forrester made some excellent decisions in writing this book which resulted in its being very effective. One great choice was the fact that she chose to focus on five different women rather than just one. Not only does this offer the reader several differing perspectives and solutions for dealing with a particular issue or situation, but it has also made the book a better and more useful tool for a larger population of women.
By showcasing five women, Forrester increased the likelihood that women will be able to relate to at least one of the women in the book, just like I felt with Alma and Jennifer. The lessons become more applicable to their everyday lives.
I also enjoyed the fact that Forrester chose to ask questions that enabled the women to not only clearly express their individual "nice" leadership styles, but also apply them to real life scenarios and situations that almost everyone will encounter at least one, either professionally or personally, in their lifetime. By allowing them to tell their own stories in first person, it made the information offered more personalized.
The only things I think Forrester could adjust are listed below:
1) She only chose to highlight a difference in race with Alma. This led to wonder what the ethnicities of the other women were because that could have had some kind of influence or impact in the things they experienced in the workforce. (I understand this wasn't the focus of the book, but race became a factor with Alma Robinson. Being black, her success was even more inspirational. If the other women were of different races and that was shared, it could possibly inspire some women even more.)
Overall, the book was a fast and interesting read! It's great, especially if you're a woman looking to learn about rising in your profession. Whether you're new to leadership styles, or just looking for a quick refresher, you can always learn more about what it's like to be a "Nice Girl On Top"."

  • This was a good read and so on time for todays economy. Just saw that women have out achieved men in obtaining college degrees, so that means there are more of us in a position to provide leadership now. Pat Forrester's writing style makes for an enjoyable read while drinking tea and contemplating ones next direction in life. As a former elected County Supervisor, I highly recommend this to anyone who is doing self analysis on how to get the best out of her own performance and those around her.
  • I would recommend this book for any woman just starting out in the workforce, or to any woman already there. It would make a great graduation gift for anyone graduating high school or college. Thank you Patricia for an awesome read.
  • Was glad to receive this book and begin reading. Plan to use the leadership strategies that apply, with colleagues in the teaching profession and even possibly with modifications in the classroom.
  • Solid Book. I've gone through a couple of self-help career books but this one was actually the most practical one for me. Real life interviews from women in different industries about their path to success. This book does not make "success" a conceptual elusive achievement, instead it chronicles the concrete small beginning steps that each respective person took to get their own success in their own industries. From mentoring, to self-discipline and accepting failures as opportunities, illumination of all their steps to the top are going to be helpful in my search for success and a fulfilling career that will be more than just a job.
  • In the book, Nice Girls on Top, Patricia Forrester thoughtfully shares insights gleaned from five female leaders. While reading it, I picked up several leadership tips, while also gaining confidence in my own leadership instincts.
  • A crucial read for both women AND men, IMHO! Clear, precise and practical on leadership and why stereotypical organizational behavior is not a recipe for success and innovation. Nice Girls gives us a crucial and valuable practice, offering us the freedom to not only make incremental steps toward being better leaders in fulfilling careers, but leading better lives altogether. Thank you!!!
