Reformation Study Bible ESV Crimson Hardcover Reformation Trust Publishing RC Sproul 9781567694413 Books Reviews

  • First the good news - this is an amazing study Bible! R.C. Sproul has produced an excellent resource for bible study. The 2015 version has been significantly updated from the 2005 release. The expanded commentary notes and book introductions are excellent. I can't put the 2015 Reformation Study Bible down, it is a joy to read and highly edifying.

The bad news - the publisher should be ashamed of printing such a wonderful resource so poorly. I am on my second replacement copy of the 2015 Reformation Study Bible (black leather edition). All copies have suffered from smeared ink. The pages are very thin and text "bleed through" is the worst I have seen in a Bible. The scripture typeface has been reduced in size from 10.25 (ITC Berkeley font) to 9.5 (Proforma font) which is still quite easy to read. But the ESV cross-reference font size within the text is so small it makes reading them very difficult. Likewise the ESV textual footnotes at the bottom of the scripture are hard to read due the tiny font. Cross-references have been relocated to the interior margins and reside on "the fold" which makes them harder to see. I consider the ESV cross references an integral part of the study bible, and as such, find the tiny cross reference font limits ease of usability.

I like the study notes and articles content of the 2015 Reformation Study Bible so much that despite the smeared print I decided to keep my copy, and I read it regularly. But regardless of how good the content is the print quality issues are unacceptable. Hopefully future printings will correct this.

I would rate content at 5 stars, but overall I can only rate the 2015 Reformation Study Bible at 3 stars until the printing issues are resolved.
  • Based on other reviews of print quality, I hesitated, but decided to order as I'm familiar with the editor. The Bible I received has none of the issues mentioned. Very well done, type could be larger, but then it would be about 25% heavier and thicker. My 63 year-old eyes, reading glasses and magnifying glass work just fine. Love the extras page ribbons and overall quality. Probably the last Bible I'll own until the LORD takes me home.
  • I just received my RSB 2015 ESV. What a privilege it is to have a copy. I read some of the reviews and the ink is fine on my copy and not smudging. The print is small, but I just use my reading glasses so it's legible. It's a beautiful looking book that comes in a book case with a welcome pamphlet introducing the features in the bible and an identifier code to register your product to receive over $400 of additional bible study resources. "Post Tenebras Lux ~ After Darkness Light" is what I wrote on the front page of my first book (2005), and now this one too.
  • Definitely worth the purchase. Lots of notes and articles in this one! My wife and I use it to study together. We both enjoy it for its depth and readability. I pray we continue using it as she and I remain hungry for God's Word. I'm grateful to walk my wife through the Scriptures with this resource (and others). For Jesus glory!
  • I have owned (still own) many Bibles over my many years. This is near the best one I have used. I also have Dr.R.C.Sproul's NKJV edition of this as well and it too is excellent. His years of study and experience have led to wonderful insights and study notes which generously fill the pages throughout this work. The quality of the print, binding, and cover are also beyond reproach. Great job. I can't recommend this Bible enough. Read and be blessed.
  • I just received my crimson, hardcover edition in the mail, so I only have had a short time to check it out, but have already formed some opinions. This review is solely on the physical book...not the content.

Right away, I was shocked at the size and weight of this Bible. The way other reviews went on about how large and heavy it is, well let's just say the box was so small and light I thought it must've been a different item! Let me note here I am a normal sized female, not some Hulk. This is the only positive in my review.

So, as far as size and weight go, it is right on par with all the other study Bibles I own, excluding the illustrated NLT, which truly is a mammoth!

I was hoping the reviews about the cross references sinking in the gutter would be wrong. No such luck. They are very difficult to read without moving the Book around a lot and using a hand to hold down one half so you can read the last half of the reference.

I also do not think this is sewn well. In my copy, there is major wrinkling in the gutters, also contributing to making references hard to read.

The pages are very thin, as in all study Bibles (excluding the hcsb, which has excellent page quality). They feel the same as both versions of my NLT study Bibles, but the bleed through is much worse. I am not sure the reason for that. It is most distracting in the Psalms, because there is a lot of white space..only it isn't white because I can actually read the words on the reverse page. The font is a poor choice due to bleed through, making it very hard to read the notes. I will also note here that I am 32...small print doesn't typically bother me.

My copy also came damaged, which has me thinking it was a return from someone else (probably who didn't appreciate the wrinkles and such). So, overall I have nothing positive to say about the quality of the physical book.

Ultimately, for me, I don't think I am going to be able to read this Bible. Maybe for the notes in short bursts. I am giving it 3 stars in fairness, as I haven't read the study content yet (and might not be able to...)
  • this is an absolutely Amazing Study Bible. it has a Ton of information in it. i've barely started to even scratch the surface of all that this Study Bible has to offer. it has Butt-Loads of information in the theological articles, confessions, catechisms and all of other things. i would Highly, Highly, recommend this Study Bible to anyone who really wants to "cannonball" into the Olympic-Sized swimming pool amount of information in this Bible. there is a Lot to take in but, it is a true treasure trove of study material.
